When the unexpected happens and your server crashes on you, are you prepared to face the problem head-on? The problem with many PC users is that they are so engrossed in using their PCs everyday that they don’t bother backing up their files, especially important ones that they would mourn the loss of should their server crash. PC data backup, not even online PC backup, is a priority for many users – and this is quite unfortunate.

For the PC users who are not experienced in PC data backup, here’s a tip for you – CDs are actually great things to have at hand as backup tools for your computer or laptop. Here’s why.

They are great support for online PC backup.

It is usually highly recommended that you backup your data using an online program that will do all the saving and recovering for you, but at the same time, it is also handy to have a hard copy of your files. In the long run, you will want to look back on older files that you deleted from your system, and you can get rid of unnecessary and unwanted files of sentimental value by saving them in a CD. You can then begin to create a CD library as some files get older and older and you require more and more space for newer ones.

They’re a great PC data backup plan for transferring files to another computer.

If you have just decided to purchase a new computer after a server crash, CDs may be better tools to rely on as you can just collect and select the files you want re-installed in your new computer. This is highly recommended for program files and important instant messaging programs and music. This is, of course, assuming that you have labelled your CDs properly.

They’re a great checking tool for online PC backup.

In the case that you need to do a run-through of the files that you have backed up online for consistency, saving them in CDs are a great way to do it. Also, it is a great tool to use if you have finished backing up your files after a long and tiring process and have realized that there are additional files that need saving – you can store them in CDs for filing.

When it comes to responsible and practical PC data backup, it is important to prioritize the files that need backing up. Begin with your basics, as these are the more important files to recover in case of a server crash. These are usually programs such as word processing programs (eg. Open Office), instant messaging programs (eg. AIM and MSN), and personal pictures that you never want to get rid of. After making sure that all your basics are safe and sound, then you can begin backing up your other files, such as music, documents, and other pictures. If you have great online PC backup, these should easily be recovered in case of a server crash.

Are you an avid PC fan who is online and using his laptop 24/7? Then you should know that one of the most heartbreaking things that can happen to a frequent PC user is a server crash. If you have lots of valuable files, programs, and documents that disappear in a server crash and you have tried to recover them to no avail, this can be a very distressing and frustrating experience for you. This is why PC data backup is so important.

Now, if you are asking yourself, “How do I backup my PC?”, then the answer is very simple: save your files as you modify them. This is a common mistake that many users make, despite them knowing how important saving files are. Here are some simple principles of PC data backup to help you, so that you won’t have to ask yourself “How do I backup my PC?” anymore.

PC data backup tip #1: Always save files as you go along.

If you are constantly creating documents on Word, or graphic art on Photoshop, or maybe even presentations on PowerPoint, always remember to click on the Save tab as soon as you make really important changes to your file. Do not automatically rely on AutoSave, as this doesn’t necessarily mean that the program will back up ALL the changes in your file. Don’t be lazy and do the saving yourself.

Backup my PC tip #2: Organize your data.

The worst backup plan ever is to scatter your important files in different non-descript folders that cannot even located and identified. Create one central folder in your desktop that will contain sub-folders of all your important files. Organize them in any which way that you would prefer – whether by year, account, person, file type, or occasion.

PC data backup tip #3: Create a “Basics” folder.

One great way of making sure that you are fully backed up in the case of a PC emergency is to create one specific folder in your files that will contain all your “basic” programs and files. These should contain ONLY the most important files that need to be recovered. This can include your favorite Instant Messaging programs, the programs and files that you often use for work or personal use, or pictures that you don’t want to lose in a server crash. Remember, though, that these should be your BASICS – meaning, don’t put anything and everything in this one folder. That’s what the rest of your sub-folders are for.

See, at the end of the day, PC data backup is something that you can do everyday, little by little, one step at a time. By organizing your files by priority and other important categories, you will make data recovery a much easier task should your server crash out on you. “What do I need to backup my PC?” is now an answerable question.

Computers today are used in almost anything, from personal matters such as emails and instant messages with loved ones, to such important business matters as web conferences via webcam and microphone and online shopping and trade. Such activities mean that computer data is much more than a stream of ones and zeroes, it means that every aspect of your personal and business life can be affected with a simple crash, or worse, a computer virus. Everything, from your pictures to your digital receipts and all other manner of records can be taken away from you, even by the simple act of somebody breaking and entering your home and stealing your laptop.

So, how to avoid such disasters from hitting you hard? Backup, I answer.

Personally, I backup my PC regularly to prevent this from happening. And you can, too, with the wide range of online PC backup services available all over the Internet.

“Backup my PC? Don’t I need disks for that?” I hear you asking. Well, the conventional methods of backing your computer up will indeed include the use of such storage media as floppy disks, CDs, DVDs and external drives. However, with an online PC backup service, everything is stored in a remote server, so as long as you can access the information online, backup will be nothing but a breeze. This conveniently eliminates any need to lug around extra disks and other storage media in case of an emergency, which may happen more often than you think, especially when you are carrying a laptop (which is more prone to wear and shock than a desktop computer). Also, this eliminates the hassle of having your storage media being damages or even destroyed entirely, given the fact that they are, well, physical media.

Convenience is the name of the game in online PC backup services. When worse comes to worst, you can even access your data from another person’s computer, as long as you have access to the online repository. This allows me to backup my PC (and you to backup yours as well) anytime, anywhere.

“So, how do I use an online PC backup service to backup my PC?” I hear you asking now. Well, the most important step to this is that you have to look for a good service to provide you with backup data. There are literally thousands of different websites to choose from, each with their own strengths and weaknesses particularly in the areas of storage and security. Choose one that suits your preferences, sign up (this usually entails a small fee) and store your precious drive data there. Oh, and do not forget to regularly, if not automatically, update your backups, so that as muh information is retained.

We may not notice it immediately, but the fact is that we are becoming increasingly dependent on computers for our day-to-day tasks. Activities such as shopping, meetings and other similar ones can now be done with electronic elements and the Internet. It is, likewise, becoming increasingly important to always have PC backup software on hand, so that a PC data backup will not seem a daunting and hassling task to accomplish.

There are, however, many misconceptions surrounding both PC backup software and the process of a PC data backup. And these must be dispelled before anything else.

First, it is a huge misunderstanding that one is immune to the need for PC backup software. Computer systems are becoming increasingly fragile nowadays, what with the increasing number of processes these machines have to deal with simultaneously, along with the greater intricacy each of these processes requires. Coupled with our aforementioned greater needs for computers nowadays, this simply means that computers are so much more prone to crashing, and that computer crashes are more damaging than ever. This is the first and foremost reason why having the required tools for a PC data backup is so important to have on hand at all times. Data loss is harder to cope with nowadays, mind you.

Second, it is a misconception that PC backup software can only be stored in physical media such as CDs, DVDs and external hard drives. There are a lot of online resources dedicated to such a form of data storage available everywhere on the Internet today. This has several benefits that are not present within the restrictions of today’s physical storage devices: one, your data is secured online, which means that you will be able to access it from any computer, as long as you have your codes with you. This is useful for situations when even your storage devices may be compromised, such as in a fire or in a flood. Two, this makes for easy updating of your data, compared to some CDs, which are non-rewritable and therefore more costly and time-consuming to update. Three, the best online PC data backup repositories boast storage capacities that simply cannot be matched by any physical media today. This gives you the comfort, not to mention the convenience, of not having to worry about your backup data (or any other data whatsoever) exceeding the storage capacity of a conventional CD.

With all that said, it is always important to go through any service that offers backup data storage, as these services are not usually free. Some may have file restrictions, some may require updates of some sort, and different services may have different security protocols. Keep these in mind when searching for a service to protect your precious data.

Once you have found a service you wish to utilize, then go for it. Trust me, protected data is well worth the insurance costs you pay for it.

Computer data crashes are becoming a more crippling happening as more and more people are turning important aspects of their lives, such as work, finances and personal moments, into the ones and zeroes that make up computer data. Consequently, having backup data on hand all the time is becoming more and more important. This overwhelming need has given rise to various online PC backup services that you can avail of as well.

PC backup software is enjoying a new revolution in the form of online PC backup services: websites that, for a fee, offer to store backup copies of all you files, which you can recover from any computer with access to the Internet, any time you experience a crash or other data destroying event. The best part is that with these services, practically the ones with continuous data protection capabilities, practically anything in your computer can be recovered. Even the simple unintentional deletion of a file can be restored with the help of an online backup.

There are a few things to watch out for when using websites of this nature, though. First is that you are essentially entrusting to them every single bit of data you have as PC backup software. Be mindful of this when creating backup copies of sensitive information, such as financial documents, digitized legal documents and the like. Second, be mindful of your Internet connection speed. While this is not a glaring problem given that the majority of people going on the Internet are using high speed connections, it would be a good idea to remember this when doing an online PC backup, as slow and fluctuating connections could burden or even downright mess up the entire operation.

The entire idea of the online PC backup is not without its merits, though. The simple fact that you do not have to carry any discs around is probably the most important of these: there is no physical object to lose or get damaged, as your data is kept secured in a remote computer. In addition to this, you will be able to access your PC backup software from any computer, as long as you have an Internet connection and the codes to unlock the data. This makes for a convenience that has so far been unmatched by any storage medium.

All in all, storing your PC backup software online would be a good insurance policy. As said above, computer data is being used for more and more important things, and computer crashes and other forms of data loss are becoming more and more difficult to cope with. So do yourself a favor and sign up for an online backup service as soon as you can. The protection, I guarantee, will be worth it.

Making sure your data is backed up is a vital part of being a PC user, whether you use your computer for work or you use it for play. For those of us that use our computers to work, we cannot afford to lose any of our precious files because this could mean the difference between getting paid and not! If you use it just for personal use, then you still don’t want to lose all of your data, because of the family photos, music, video files, games and more that you could lose in the event of a computer failure.

There are many different things that can cause data loss. A computer crash is the most common. In order to keep your files safe in the event that your computer crashes, then you need to make sure everything important is safe and sound somewhere else – somewhere that’s not actually on the computer itself. Popular backup methods include CD and DVD ROMs, flash drives, and external hard drives.

Backing up your data to a CD or DVD is easy – simply burn your important files to a disk and you’re done. If you have a lot of files, though, you might want to go with a different method than burning to disk, as you could end up with a ton of disks and still not be done. This is particularly true if you have large video files because they may not always fit on one disk.

If you have a lot of data or many large sized files, then look to a jump or flash drive, or an external hard drive as the solution. Flash drives are small USB powered drives that you can save your files to and they are also sometimes called “jump drives.” They range in size (in terms of how much data they can store, not their actual physical size!) from small like 256 MB to much larger, like upwards of 8 gigs or more. These drives are perfect for transferring files from computer to computer, but they can also work as a backup method. To back up all of your data, though, you may need a handful of drives, so it may be better to just go with an external hard drive and save the jump drive backup method for an emergency.

External hard drives are basically big hard drives that aren’t connected to your computer except when you hook it up. Simply copy all of the files you want over and you’re done. When buying an external, look for one that has its own fans or other cooling mechanism, though, to make sure it stays safe and sound, as overheating can cause the drive to fail, and then where you will be?

In the event of a computer failure, you do not want to lose any of your precious data, regardless of what that data might be. If you take the time to back up your files now, it will save you a lot of hassle in the future!

If you run a business that relies on servers – for example, for websites or for data storage – then you need to make sure those servers are safe and secure, especially if your business involves using servers to host websites or store data for customers and clients rather than just for yourself. Since servers are subject to crashes just like a desktop or laptop would be, you need to make sure that the data they contain is backed up just as you would with your desktop or laptop’s data. And a virus can render your server useless just like it can with a desktop or laptop PC.

To keep your data safe, you need a disaster recovery plan – a plan outlining the measures and steps you take (both preventative and in the event of a disaster) to keep your business up and running even if something were to happen to your technological infrastructure.

While backing up your PC’s data to an external hard drive, portable USB device, or even burning it to CDs or DVDs is an important step to take, that process isn’t as useful for a server. Servers generally contain a very large amount of information, so to back it up properly, you will need another server or very large external hard drive to get the job done. But even that isn’t enough to make sure your data is completely safe, because if you store your backups in the same place as you store the original sources, it is possible to still lose it all. For example, if you keep your backup storage in the office along with your computers and servers, if a flood or fire happens, then both can be destroyed, leaving you with no computer, no server and nothing to use to recover and restore your data once you do get your new machines. Since you can’t always prevent these things from happening, it is vital to make sure you have a plan in place to both try to prevent them and to help you recover if they ever happen.

Enter online server backup. Online server backup services ensure that not only do you have copies of your server data available but they have that data stored at their location instead of yours, so no matter what might befall your office building, your data is still safe. If something happens, you will be able to easily and quickly recover and restore your services, with minimal interruption and data loss. Instead of your business taking even more of a hit after a disaster, you will still have your data available to keep on working with!

When you choose a service, make sure that they offer encryption to keep your data safe from being stolen, and that they offer simple and easy processes for making backups of your servers and recovering them. Taking the time now to make sure your technology and data are secure now will save you a lot of time and grief in the future, if something were ever to happen.

Data loss is a frustration that no one wants to deal with. If you have ever had your computer crash and lost any important files, then you know how difficult and frustrating it can be. This is especially true for those of us that use our computers for business purposes. If you work from home or you run your own small business, your computer is probably one of the most important things that goes into keeping everything running correctly and smoothly.

But if that computer crashes and you have not gone ahead and gotten your data backed up, then you are potentially facing a crisis – financial information, customer and client information, order histories and other records, and more…you could lose it all if you haven’t taken the proper precautions. The same thing can happen if your home or office is broken into and your computers are stolen, or someone runs off with your laptop while you’re out and about.

One popular method people choose to back up their computers is by putting the files on CD or DVD, or by copying it all over to an external hard drive. But the problem is that if you store those backup items in your home or office, and something terrible like a fire or flood happens, or a break-in, then you still run the risk of losing all of your data.

But that’s why there are online backup solutions! There are a lot of services online that allow you to store your backup data off site, so that if anything happens to your computer or the building it’s in, your data can still be easily and quickly restored. These online PC backup services are the ideal solution for anyone that has important data that they cannot afford to lose.

Different services offer different features and benefits, but the basic idea is that you will be able to upload all of your data to a remote server, where it will be kept safe and secure by the people that maintain and run the service. You will be able to access your online backup files any time you need them, by going through your chosen service’s website or via a small program you install on your computer.

When you choose an online PC backup service, make sure that you choose the package that fits your needs as closely as possible. The services aren’t free and money isn’t usually endless when you run a small business, so reading the fine print and choosing carefully will ensure that all of your data is safe and you don’t pay more than you have to or can afford. When you are choosing a service itself, make sure that the servers are 100% secure, especially if you plan to back up financial information.

Once you have found the right service for your business, then you can rest easy knowing that no matter what happens at home or away, someone has all of your data safe and sound, waiting for you when you need it.

Whether you use your computer for personal or business use, you don’t want to have to face data loss. Data loss ranges from an annoyance to a disaster, depending on what the data was and what you were using it for. It is annoying and frustrating to lose your personal data – photos, mp3 files, video files, games, etc – and it could be a flat out terrible disaster if you lost business data like financial and tax information, customer records and more.

Computers and servers are not invincible and things can go wrong. Crashes are the most common problems, but you can also experience data loss from a variety of disasters, both natural and man made. A natural disaster includes something like a fire or flood, whereas a man made disaster can include everything from hackers and burglary to viruses and user error. In all of those disaster cases, whether they occurred due to nature or a person, the end result is likely to be the same – data loss.

While it’s a smart idea to back up your data to disk or external hard drive, that won’t really help you if your office has a fire – both the original source and the backup devices could be destroyed, leaving you with nothing. Instead, you need a way to make sure your data is backed up, updated regularly, stored in another location, and easy to access when you need it for recovery purposes. It sounds like a tall order, but all of that can be done easily and safely via the use of an online backup data storage service.

There are many of these services available to you, and they make it simple and fast to make sure all of your data is copied and put away safely until you need it. Data protection centers house lots of data for their customers, and they even almost always have another backup location where they store further copies in case something happens to THEIR facility. Basically, if you go with a data protection and backup storage solution, you can count on your data being safe and waiting for you whenever you need it.

If disaster strikes and you need to recover your data, you can do it in several different ways, depending on the particular service you went with and the nature of the data loss. If you simply need to restore a few files, you can often do it from a local backup device the service will provide you. If you need to restore something large like a whole hard drive or a database or a whole server, then you can often simply restore it from the service’s servers. If your personal or business equipment is destroyed, a service may even make it so that you can access a virtual version of your data from an Internet browser and work that way until you get new equipment. Whatever the case, going with an online backup data storage service will make sure your data is safe.
